Basic odd meter foundations are covered in this excellent new book by former BIT instructor Dino Monoxelos. Using standard notation, audio examples, simple explanations, and a sense of humor, Monoxelos covers everything from basic triple meter, to compound rhythms. One of the most helpful parts of this book is actually hearing the examples played on the CD. He further simplifies this often intimidating concept by explaning "weird music" in familiar terms. Can you sing the theme to Mission Impossible? If so, then you already have a sense about complex meter.
As Monoxelos also states in the intro, Odd Meter Bassics is not a style study book, or rhythm study. For the purpose of better understanding the meters themselves, he has kept the chord progressions very simple (most often blues progressions). Presented this way, the lines clearly illustrate different types of emphasis within the time. There's also plenty of text and explanation for those who like to mentally acclimate themselves, and also plenty of examples to play (and play along with). For learning or reference, this is a great book to have around the music stand. Beginners shouldn't be intimidated (it seems to be written with this level in mind), and advanced players will find it a great learning/reference tool as well.
